Karen Shore receives APA Presidential Citation
from Elaine Rodino, President, Division 42:

I am happy to announce to the 42 membership that at the Awards Hour of the Joint Mini-Convention "Psychologists Creating Impact" (Div 42 and 17), I presented an APA Presidential Citation from our APA President Pat DeLeon to Karen Shore. President DeLeon asked me to present this award to Karen with the request that she be surprised. Karen was definitely surprised. The Award Program was to honor Ted Strickland and Brian Baird. Karen said her thanks and recognition to Ted Strickland who was very supportive to the Rescue Health Care Day event. Below is the text of the Presidential Citation:

PRESIDENTIAL CITATION FROM PAT DELEON, Ph.D., J.D.
PRESIDENT, AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
TO KAREN SHORE, Ph.D.

Karen has personally, passionately and articulately taken the entire managed care philosophy of the country to task, showing where it is flawed, advocating for patient rights to freely choose their mental health practitioner, fighting against the tyranny of the corporate incursions into the domain of mental health care, and helping people to return to personal responsibility between therapist and client.

She has gained national recognition on national television and in print, in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times for her fight against the invasions of privacy and denials of service to patients. She has formed and has chaired a national organization to structure this fight.

Karen is primarily a practicing clinical psychologist who adds all this advocacy to her regular work schedule. When many of us would have conceded the field to the corporate intruders into the treatment relationship, she has led us back to the battle and suggested strategies for the preservation of sensible patient treatment.
