| The Distinguished Public Service Award for 2001 has been granted to Stephen Pfeiffer, Ph.D. on behalf of his work of political and legislative advocacy for the advancement of the profession and practice of psychology. Most of Dr. Pfeiffer's advocacy as been through his position as Executive Director of the Association for the Advancement of Psychology (AAP). Through Advance, AAP's quarterly Newsletter, he has communicated with and provided information to fellow psychologists nationwide for almost ten years. His articles about the importance of psychologists' involvement in legislative advocacy appear regularly in the IP and in numerous state Psychological Association Bulletins. Dr. Pfeiffer's leadership in the very successful AAP Black-Tie Dinners have been important in cultivating positive working relationships with Congressional Representatives and Senators. These leaders have increased their sensitivity for and understanding of the concerns of psychologists because of the personal contact with psychologist/practitioner leaders. Dr. Pfeiffer's commitment to press for psychologists involvement in advocacy helped stir support for the eventual election of two psychologist/congressional representatives - Ted Strickland and Brian Baird. | |
