2005 was a very active year for Division 42. We were fortunate to have an excellent Executive Committee and Board of Directors as well as numerous outstanding and dedicated Committee and Task Force Chairs and members. Together, we accomplished a great deal for the Division and our members. These activities and accomplishments are reviewed briefly in my annual report to you on pages 202-204. For more information on any of them please contact me directly at drjbarnett1@comcast.net . And, if reading any of this excites you about your Division and your profession, and you want to volunteer to help us accomplish even more in 2006 please contact our incoming President, Lillian Comas-Diaz, at cultura@starpower.net . Also, please be sure to read the Finance Report on page xx to see the details of the financial health of our division. I’ve worked with a great Board of Directors this year and great committee and task force chairs and members (see who they are on the inside cover of this issue). I extend my deepest thanks to each of them for the wonderful work they’ve done for Division 42 this year and for all they do every year. You can read of their many contributions in the annual report. I also express my thanks to our Administrator, Jeannie Beeaff. As was pointed out by more than one Board member this year, Jeannie has done an outstanding job of keeping up with (and sometimes being a step or two ahead of) a workaholic President this year. Jeannie has been personally involved in everything we did this year. Without her many contributions much of what we did this year wouldn’t have been possible. I also extend my special thanks and appreciation to two past presidents of the Division, Ron Fox and Jean Carter. Ron has been a steady support this year and has provided wisdom and guidance that have proven invaluable. Jean has served as my mentor and role model throughout my presidency. I’ve worked hard to build on her accomplishments as President and to emulate all she has done for the Division. Jean has served as a great resource and support for me throughout the year. Thanks to all these fine individuals for their contributions. While we have accomplished much this year thus far (as you can see in my annual report to you) there are two important remaining tasks that require our attention. For each, we must all work together to be successful and each is of great importance to our future as independent practitioners. First, we must each vote in the upcoming election for APA President. The ballots will be mailed to us on October 15. Depending on when you receive this issue of the IP you may have already received your ballot. Please do not throw it away. It is of vital importance that we each vote in this election to have our voices heard. The APA President leads the APA Board of Directors and Council of Representatives, has significant control over determining APA’s priorities, and greatly influences how APA’s resources are used, to include our $91 million annual budget. It is imperative that we elect a strong leader who is knowledgeable about and sensitive to practitioner issues and needs. This person is Katherine Nordal, Ph.D. Division 42’s Board of Directors has enthusiastically endorsed Katherine Nordal #1 for APA President. Katherine is an experienced leader, a full-time independent practitioner, a former APA Congressional Fellow, the current Chair of CAPP, and presently Division 42’s Finance Chair. Katherine has served on APA’s Board of Directors and is a proven leader who knows how to get things done. She is an independent practitioner who will work hard to advance our profession for us all. So, please vote in this election and please vote Katherine Nordal #1 .Division 42’s Board also request that you rank two other practitioner candidates Stephen Ragusea and Thomas Vaughn #2 and #3 in the order of your preference. So, please vote and please vote for these fine candidates. The second task we must address is the APA Apportionment ballot. On November 1 APA will mail us each an apportionment ballot. We each have ten votes and may allocate them to any APA Division or any State, Provincial, or Territorial Psychological Association. The outcome of this balloting determines how many seats on APA’s governing body, the Council of Representatives, that each group has the following year. Division 42 is APA’s largest division. But, we are not fully represented on APA Council. If every member of Division 42 sends in their apportionment ballot and allocates their 10 votes to Division 42 we would then have several more seats on APA Council. The more seats, the more voices, and the more votes representing practitioners and practice issues and needs we will have. What an easy way to ensure our own futures professionally. But, typically only 18-21% of APA members participate in these elections. We must change this and we must change it this year! We really can make a difference. So, if you want to see APA do more for practitioners, see more money and other resources go into practice issues, and help ensure our own success in the future, please fill out these two ballots and send them in to APA. Please vote for Katherine Nordal #1 for APA President, with Thomas Vaughn and Stephen Ragusea #2 and #3 in the order of your preference. Please give as many of your 10 votes as possible to Division 42 on the apportionment ballot. Let’s do this together and really make a difference for independent practice. Jeff |
