Quick Marketing/Public Service Tactic

Pauline Wallin

At a recent Rotary Club meeting, a psychologist colleague gave a 12- minute presentation on depression –

Nothing profound - just the statistics, signs of depression, the annual cost to business, and treatment options. He then opened it up for questions. Folks, I have never seen so many questions at this Rotary club. Usually the speaker gets a couple of questions, but my colleague got dozens. We went overtime in the meeting, but hardly anyone left. He didn’t get a chance to answer all the raised hands.

What struck me was how hungry people are for this type of information. I know it’s a hazard of the trade, but I tend to assume that everyone knows about depression. Today was a reminder that they don’t. Even our business leaders have very little sophistication about this subject, which also touches their own or their families’ lives. Just thought others might welcome a reminder about this. Community groups are waiting for your call. Give a talk, and keep it simple - it’s one of the best forms of marketing.
