42 Honors its Founders

At the Annual Division 42 Membership meeting, the Division honored the “Dirty Dozen” who:

• helped found the Division

• got practitioners involved in the governance of APA

• advanced practitioner participation in healthcare

They are:

Ted Blau, Ph.D.Nick Cummings, Ph.D.Ray Fowler, Ph.D.

Mel Gravitz, Ph.D.Ernie Lawrence, Ph.D.Marv Metsky, Ph.D.

Gene Shapiro, Ph.D.Bob Weitz, Ph.D.Jack Wiggins, Ph.D.

Rogers Wright, Ph.D.Frank Young, Ph.D.C.J. Rosencrans, Ph.D. (deceased)

Don Schultz, Ph.D. (deceased)Max Siegel, Ph.D. (deceased)

Dr. Nick Cummings described how their advocacy got insurance companies to cover psychological services and how they got APA to advocate for practitioners. Bob Weitz and Ray Fowler shared war stories from the earliest days of practitioner advocacy. All agreed that our sometimes beleaguered mood of today is similar to the mood in those earlier days of psychologists carving out our niche as legitimate practitioners.

There is no way to adequately thank these founders for their foresight, leadership, and hard work. Hopefully the meeting at least expressed a token of our appreciation.
