Michael Murphy, Ph.D., ABPP Collaborative Workplace Practices

The session on Collaborative Workplace Practices was part of a series of programs associated with the PICK Project developed by Division 42. Fifty people attended the symposium that was chaired by Michael Murphy, Chair of the Division 42 Emerging Patterns of Practice Committee and member of the PICK Task Force. The symposium presented three examples of approaches psychologists have taken to take advantage of the practice opportunities offered by collaboration with professionals in business.

Chris Stout presented opportunities and strategies for direct contracting with employers for services to their staffs. The approaches Dr. Stout discussed went beyond the traditional employee assistance services and presented ways for pricing and managing services delivered through direct contracting. Alan Graham’s presentation focused on executive coaching and development which is a process whereby executive level management can improve employee personal and work effectiveness. Dr. Graham presented the elements of development intervention s with individual executives and provided a case example. Marion Gindes presented an examination of services offered to assist employers to address diversity, gender issues, and sexual harassment in the workplace. These are problems in the contemporary work setting that not only affect employee and work group effectiveness but also expose employers to legal risk.

Ellen Heller, who has worked in the area of personal management services to large corporations and as a consultant, was the discussant for the program and provided perspectives from the business community. Her comments addressed the approaches the presenters discussed and provided specific comments on strategies that aid psychologists in addressing the needs of business and operating in that culture.

The material presented at this symposium will be included in PICK guides and a book is being planned that will provide fuller coverage of psychological services in business settings.
