The Practice Information Clearing House of Knowledge (PICK) - 42 had a grand kick off at the 107th APA convention in Boston in August. PICK sponsored four symposiums at the convention, all of which stressed collaboration. Since PICK is aimed at providing practitioners with information about various niche practices, these programs were offered to increase knowledge about four topics of great interest to the practitioner community and a forum for our PICK authors in these four specialty areas. The four programs were on Health, Forensic, Work Place and Family. The first three-hour symposium featured Dr. Carol Goodheart, President of Division 42 and the originator of the PICK concept and Dr. Susan McDaniel of Division 43. The other speakers were Thomas Campbell, MD, Jill Brace ONeill, RN, and Louis Greco, Pharmacist. The focus was on collaboration within the medical community. The program was well attended. The second program was chaired by Dr. Richard Saunders, a co-chair of PICK and a clinical and forensic psychologist. It concentrated on collaboration with attorneys and the courts. The speakers were Dr. Leslie Drozd, a clinical and forensic practitioner in California, who outlined issues related to child maltreatment allegations in child custody disputes. Dr. Lenore Walker gave an overview of an outstanding training program at her university affiliation, which reaches psychologists, but also addresses needs for behavioral information from the bench and the bar. Dr. Bob Geffner described his Institutes work in Texas and California that addresses problems related to domestic violence, including specific psychological interventions and legal interventions that are effective with this very frequent referral problem area. Dr. Joseph Poirier described his work over the last several years in Montgomery County, Maryland with juvenile sex offenders, a notoriously difficult clinical and forensic population. Thomas R. Callahan, Esq. outlined the numerous areas of overlap between attorneys and psychologists when collaborating on specific cases, both criminal and civil. Obviously, care has to be taken to keep the client adequately represented as well as behaviorally intact during the course of often grueling participation in the legal arena. The program was also well attended, with a number of audience questions during the course of the presentations centering on specific program details. The third symposium, chaired by Dr. Michael Murphy, former President of Division 42 and a member of the PICK task force, raised issues of collaboration within the business community. The participants were: Drs. Norine Johnson, Sanford Portnoy, and Ethan Pollack. The program was well attended. The audience clearly did not want to leave without having more answers to their questions, so the panel for the fourth program had to shoo them out! The fourth symposium was co-chaired by Dr. Norma Simon, co-chair of PICK, and Patricia Pitta, a member of the PICK task force. The participants covered a vast territory in family issues. Dr. Pitta spoke about collaborating, especially the ability to collaborate with the clergy on family practice issues. Rev. Maurice Fetty, the minister with whom Dr. Pitta has collaborated for many years, spoke about how this works from the ministerial point of view. Dr. Michael Gottlieb talked about working with the courts and the legal system. Dr. James Bray talked about collaborating with step-families in order to solve the problems inherent in this version of family life. Dr. Don-David Lusterman spoke about working with clergy and lawyers, when working with couples in which there has been infidelity. All of these programs highlighted the PICK niche guides. There were pens available at the Division 42 booth along with twenty eight niche guides and another four to be available by mail after the convention. There was a great deal of interest in the guides and a brisk beginning to sales of the guides. The guides cover a variety of topics. (See the lists on the following page or the Division 42 web site: www.division42.org. Authors of the guides were honored at the Division 42 social hour on Sunday night. Dr. Goodheart was commended for her creativity in originating and developing this idea. All the authors were celebrated for providing so much up-to-date information on their specialities for other practitioners to use. It was inspiring to us to find so many of our colleagues who were willing to do these guides and quickly! Now that the convention is over, the PICK notebooks and niche guides are available by mail, the Division web site, Fax, or E-mailing Jeannie Beeaff, Division Administrator at Div42apa@primenet.com. The niche guides cover many different specialties. We are still recruiting new authors for more guides. If you have a special niche that you are willing to share, please contact either Dr. Dick Saunders at anchorbh@juno.com or Dr. Norma Simon at normasimon@aol.com or Kim Ricketts at kimr@strategease.com. Become a Division 42 PICK participant by either writing or reading our guides. For authors, a template including ethical guidelines and a sample niche topical paper are available from Kim Ricketts. The price is low to Division members$15 for a notebook, 3 niche guides, the ethics insert, and a marketing plan outline. The outline was written by Kim Ricketts, an experienced consultant to several mental health practices, and Dr. Kal Heller, a PICK 42 Task Force member, author, and advocate of marketing strategies for psychologists. Thanks again for all the support we have received the last two years from the Division of Independent Practice, the Division 42 Board, the Executive Committee, other collaborative committees, and The Independent Practitioner and its Editor, Dr. Mike Brickey (also a Task Force member)! |
