At the end of my year as President of this great Division, I want to give you an accounting of what has been done through this year. It has been a busy year, with much accomplished. Council of Representatives: Thanks to your apportionment balloting, we expanded our representation on APA Council to seven representativesthe largest representation of any group. We actively supported Ron Levants successful run for President of APA. Membership: We continue to be the largest division in APA, but we aim to increase membership. We have a new membership brochure, and Membership Committee Chair Doug Haldeman has spearheaded a campaign to expand our diversity members through an express welcome. This campaign will continue in 2004 under chair Roz Dorlen. Student/Early Career Psychologists: This membership is expanding, with an active committee and a voting Board representative, with the first election now underway. Program: Chair Lillian Comas-Diaz put together a wonderful program for convention, with a number of sessions offering continuing education credit. We began an affiliation with the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, with a generous donation from the Register to support our social hour at convention. Awards: Ron Levant was awarded our Distinguished Psychologist award, while Henry Saemon (editor of the National Psychologist) received the Distinguished Public Service Award posthumously. Lillian Comas-Diaz received the Rosalee Weiss Award. Ken Pope received the 42Online award and David Palmiter received the Best of IP award. Continuing Education: Chair Bob Wernick began a very active program this year, with an online ethics course (developed by Jeff Barnett) and home study courses that provide credit for the PICK42 Niche Guides as the learning source. Miguel Gallardo and Jean Carter developed preconvention programs, one for student/early career members and the other designed to assist practitioners in implementing the Multicultural Guidelines. Public Relations and Public Education Committee: Under the guidance of chair Elaine Rodino, PRPE developed a full set of media releases on timely topics. Diversity Issues Committee: The Division was well-represented at the National Multicultural Conference and Summit in January 2003. Chair Rita Dudley-Grant has strengthened the committee and extended the range of diversity perspectives represented. PICK42 Niche Guides have prospered under the leadership of Hilda Besner, with new guides under development, a series of CE programs already being offered and the first stages of a set of brochures linked to the Niche Guides to assist practitioners in expanding their practices. The Resource Development Task Force, chaired by Jeff Barnett, coordinated a number of projects that expanded existing efforts and began new projects designed to provide better service to members and to increase the resources available for additional Division initiatives for members. We completed and implemented important bylaws changes and developed a significantly revised Policy and Procedures Manual to assist governance members. We responded to a number of proposals coming from APA. It was a very productive year in terms of services provided to members, participation by more members and effective organizational management. I thank the Board members, committee chairs and members, and the members of this great Division for making 2003 a very good year! |
