The first in a series of distance learning courses developed by the Marketing and Public Education Committee has been completed. “Marketing Strategies to Position Your Practice for the 21st Century” enrolled 37 psychologists from Div. 42 and was offered free, as a member benefit. Response was so great we created a waiting list, and will offer a similar program later in ’06. The course features four learning “modules”, each with a fresh perspective on marketing as well as strategies for maintaining and increasing practitioners’ referral base in this challenging health care climate. The modules were edited by Nancy Molitor and  included “Ethics and Progressive Marketing Strategies for Independent Practice” by Tammy Martin-Causey; “Marketing through Quality Care” by John Rudisill; “Going Public with your Private Practice” by Jana Martin and “Implementing Your Practice Marketing Plan” by Tammy Martin-Causey. Each module consisted of an original paper by the author, available for download on the division website, followed by an hour conference call with the author and registered participants. The conference call offered an opportunity for lively dialogue and questions and answers and resulted in ongoing email group communication after the call ended. The course created a real distance learning community among the participants, which continues after the course has ended. Participants, who ranged from early career psychologists to seasoned veterans in our field, were also given the opportunity to submit their own practice marketing plans to the email group or to the authors for individual feedback.

We learned from this first course there is a healthy appetite for marketing information and resources among our members and this new technology offers an exciting opportunity to deliver even more sophisticated programs. We are in the process of more formally evaluating this course and developing ideas for future courses. Please let me know via email if you are interested in information about upcoming courses authoring future marketing related modules.
