Here is a brief update to provide some insight into the membership committee’s activities and upcoming plans for 2006, highlighting The Ambassador Program. We hope this will generate some additional volunteers to assist the committee in our efforts.

The committee decided to implement a two year plan. This year we are working toward three goals: 1) Set the foundation for next year by doing some background research regarding membership data from APA and other divisions; 2) Continue to generate membership recruitment and retention plans that consist of developing a network of representatives in 10-15 states – The Ambassador Program; and 3) Collaborate with the APAGS, the ECP committee, and with other divisions in generating some membership initiatives and joint programs.

Division 42 Ambassador Program

There have been several attempts in past years in coordinating our membership recruitment efforts across the country. Our efforts to coordinate statewide recruitment are intentional in that as a division, we know that mass mailings across the country are not cost effective, simply because, like many of us, most psychologists receive too much mail. Ultimately, the Division 42 membership brochure gets placed in the bottom of the pile to only be forgotten when the next days mail arrives. What we know is that nothing works quite like personal relationships and personal experiences. This personal contact and connection with members of the division is what ultimately makes a difference in providing a home for psychologists. As a result, we developed the Division 42 Membership Ambassador Program.

The program uses members across the country to reach out to others in their local and statewide associations. We would welcome any folks from other states who would be willing to support the division in this capacity. The membership committee understands the time commitment in this effort and would like to formally recognize our ambassadors at the membership meeting at the APA convention, in addition to recognition in each edition of the IP. We are making efforts to express our appreciation for your efforts and know that your time is important. The membership committee is still identifying the best ways to recognize our ambassadors and we welcome any ideas you may have for us. The states below represent the geographic location of the members of the membership committee. Ideally, we would like to recruit more division members to participate in the program. Here are the current division ambassadors:

  • California - Dr. Ilene Serlin
  • Georgia – Dr. Jennifer Kelly
  • Maryland – Drs. Monica Neel and Jeff Barnett
  • Michigan – Drs. Valerie Shebroe and Josephine Johnson
  • Missouri – Dr. Liz Grodsky
  • Washington, D.C. – Dr. Lillian Comas-Diaz

We have also contacted the Florida and Nebraska Psychological Associations who have also expressed their willingness to send out Division 42 membership brochures. We would like to have Division 42 membership brochures at conferences and conventions across the country with our own members speaking to the importance and significance of joining Division 42. Please let us know what ideas you may have for us and if you would be willing to assist us in your state.

Finally, I want to highlight for you the division 42 membership benefits:

  • Division 42 has a strong voice in APA governance that directly affects your practice.
  • Division 42 members receive the Independent Practitioner (IP), the division’s quarterly publication. The IP is filled with practice development articles, updates from the division’s committees, and up-to-date practice issues.
  • Division 42 offers services such as the Division 42 and Home study CE, PICK 42 Niche Guides that provide practitioners with user-friendly information for updating clinical skills, expanding practices and branching out into new areas, and a unique email group that can be used as a referral network among colleagues and serves as a discussion platform.
  • Division 42 Announcement Only email group which provides members with our monthly e-mail newsgram, In Touch With 42, a brief update on the latest issues impacting practice that includes helpful resources.
  • Division 42 is committed to diversity in all aspects. In fact, next year’s convention theme will be Expanding your Practice: Diversity, Creativity and Spirituality.

Let me also encourage you to take some time to familiarize yourself with the division’s website: 42online at http://www.division42.org/index.html. In the members section you will find a wealth of information from publications to practice development tools. On the website you will also find our Bibliotherapy Project with 108 reviews of books that can be integrated into your work in ongoing psychotherapy with clients. There is also information about our various committees and task forces in the event you would like to become involved with the division’s activities.

We also encourage you to join the Division 42 email group by sending an email message to: div42apa@cox.net. Tell us that you are a Division 42 member; list your APA number and your full name. The email group is a wonderful member benefit connecting practitioners all over the country from a wide range of specialty areas and practice settings
