Open this book to any page, and you’re treated to nuggets of valuable advice. Not surprising from a psychologist who has honed her expertise over two decades of writing and speaking about effective and creative ways to manage life’s challenges.
Now I Get It! is a collection of Dr. Linda Sapadin’s best 62 articles previously published in the Herald chain of newspapers.
Each article in this “best of” collection is brief, but packed with wisdom. In two to four pages, you get a statement of the problem, an example, and – most importantly – specific action tips.
It’s certainly not a substitute for psychotherapy, nor for deep reflection. But the book is a great adjunct to patients who are already in therapy. And it’s a handy reference for anyone – even psychologists – on what to do in specific types of situations.
The articles in Now I Get It! are divided into six sections: Personal Growth (which includes sub-sections on Thinking, Feeling, and Acting), Communication (With others, Within yourself), Intimate Relationships, The Art of Parenting, Dealing with Difficult People, and The Change Process.
In the chapter, “Thinking That Makes Things Worse” Dr. Sapadin summarizes the types of destructive styles of thought, and in a no-nonsense way tells the reader, “If you often think in these kinds of ways, it’s time to make a change.” She then immediately gives some practical tips on how to do this.
In the chapter, “Watching What You Say at Home”, Dr. Sapadin reminds us that, “You have a choice. Every time you communicate something to your partner, your choice of words, your tone of voice and your body language can nurture or injure your relationship.” She then illustrates the differences between destructive and constructive communication styles.
In the section on dealing with difficult people, Dr. Sapadin addresses Axis II personality types, giving useful advice that keeps you from feeling manipulated, while still maintaining civility.
Don’t let the brevity of the articles fool you. It’s not easy to pack so much punch into so few words, but Linda Sapadin does it over and over in this book.
Now I Get It need not be read from cover to cover. It’s the kind of book that you skip around in, depending on what issue you are dealing with on any particular day.
You’ll want to get extra copies for gifts. And be sure to put a copy in your waiting room. By reading a chapter or two prior to their appointments, your clients will be primed for their sessions.
