President Elect's Column

Jana Martin

Jana MartinBeing President-Elect of Division 42 is like going to a party where there’s a big present waiting. There’s time to look around at what other people brought and what they have that you might want; to learn about differences and similarities in opinions about what’s best; to observe who adds life to the party and who will get things done; and to try things on to discover what fits just right. This is a year for me to create a wish list—one that focuses on meeting the needs of independent practitioners. It’s a prime time.

So far in my official role as President-elect, I have attended a Board meeting, participated in many committee telephone conferences, worked on APA Convention programming and the division’s 25th anniversary celebration (I told you there was a party!), brainstormed with President Laura, made some committee appointments, continued my work on the Health Care for the Whole Person Task Force, attended an APA Divisional Leadership Training Program, and attended two programs for which Division 42 has been a co-sponsor—the Multicultural Summit and the Advocacy Summit. I’ve also taken time to review what the division has done historically for its members as well as its mission, and I’ve listened to what many practitioners are asking for via the listserv, what efforts they support, what they get upset and excited about, and what some have found helpful in their practices. I’ve got a lot more listening to do, so I invite you to tell me what’s on your list. It’s time to prime.

Here’s what I think so far. As a division, as psychologists, and as independent practitioners, it’s important that we be in the right place at the right time with the right action. It’s important that we be ready. And it’s important not only to seek out the right places and times but also to create them. Sometimes that means being in the forefront on practice issues for our profession. Other times that means being the supporter and protector of others. Sometimes that means being trailblazers, and other times that means being good collaborators and partners with other professions. Sometimes that means being aggressive and vocal, and other times that means being patient and being good listeners. It always means being good role models, good public educators, and strong advocates for the profession. That’s primary.

Here’s what else I think. With its focus on the independent practice of psychology, Division 42 continues to concentrate on advocating for the profession and for its members; to develop training programs and resources to enhance the work of practitioners; to support causes impacting practice; to highlight the role of psychology in healthcare; to be visionary and anticipate needs and solutions; and to partner with others to maximize benefits to members. And so much more. Because of the successful and strategic work of previous leaders from governance and membership, we are an essential and dynamic division. We need to continue to be in the right places at the right times with the right action and to create those opportunities. I’m looking forward to the coming year, and I’m thrilled to be a part of all that the division is and will become. If you’re not already at the party, I invite you to join me. Bring your own ideas. Division 42 is primary help care for the independent practitioner. What a gift!
