New Division 42 Task Force
Tools for Independent Practitioner Success (TIPS)

Jeff Zimmerman

ZimmermanTIPS (Tools for Independent Practitioner Success) is a new task force of Division 42 that I am pleased to Chair by request of our President Jana Martin, Ph.D. In addition to Jana’s presence on the task force, I am joined by Drs. Deb Klingender, Tammy Martin-Causey, Jason Seidel, Steve Walfish and Pauline Wallin. Before introducing you to the work of the task force, I must say how pleased I am to be involved with this team. Most of us had the good fortune to meet at the mid-winter division meeting this past January in Tampa and I was so pleased to see the commitment, experience and insight of my colleagues. I am looking forward to a great year ahead.

Our mission is to offer Division 42 members (and possibly others) a package of tools and other important information which will be of use to psychologists in independent practice throughout one’s career. We will be providing easy access to information pertinent to early, mid and later career clinicians through a variety of means.

For example, at the upcoming annual convention in Boston we will have 4 symposia with 18 panelists. The symposia are entitled:

Recently, we also partnered with the Membership Committee to offer some tips for practice during tough financial times. Jana Martin, Ph.D. put some of these on the listserv (more to follow) and they are also going to be on the Division 42 website.

We are also in the process of building an interactive web-based bulletin board or forum which will be both a discussion opportunity and a storehouse or library of information pertinent to the different developmental stages of clinical practice as one progresses through one’s career. We expect this library will have downloadable files from various sources and across many different topic areas such as starting in practice, the financial aspects of practice, public education information, insurance options, structuring a practice, and preparation for retirement, to name but a few. It will certainly be a work in progress and something which I encourage you to email me your ideas about (drz@jzphd.com). I will certainly keep you informed about the forum as we go forward with its development. I am hoping we can debut it at the convention.

By the way, if you have TIPS for our colleagues feel free to send them along to me.

Keep on the look out for more tips from TIPS.
