Distinguished Psychologist of the Year:
Jeffrey E. Barnett, Psy.D., ABPP

Jeffrey E. Barnett is the quintessential leader. A relentless advocate for professional psychology, Jeff is full of boundless energy. His leadership style is effective, empowering, and diplomatic. Jeff’s service to the Division of Psychologists in Independent Practice ranges from being Past President, Convention Program Chair, Advocacy Group Chair, Fellows Chair, Mentor, to innumerable contributions. His vision and vitality are only surpassed by his commitment to psychology.

A licensed psychologist in independent practice, Jeff is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology in Clinical Psychology and Clinical Child and Adolescence Psychology. Additionally he is a Professor on the Affiliate Faculty of the Department of Psychology of Loyola College in Maryland.
Jeff’s illustrious service to organized psychology is at both state and national levels. He has been a past president of the Maryland Psychological Association, Division of Psychologists in Independent Practice, and of the Division of State and Provincial Psychological Associations (31). Jeff has also served as APA Council Representative and chair of the APA Convention Board. Currently, Jeff is president-elect of the Division of Psychotherapy, and a Member of the Board of Directors of the Association for the Advancement of Psychology.

A fellow of 5 APA divisions, Jeff’s contributions to psychology have been recognized by several groups. The recipient of the Maryland Psychological Association Outstanding Professional Contributions by a Psychologist Award; the Division 31 Outstanding Professional Contributions Award; Jeff also received the APA Karl F. Heiser Presidential Award for Advocacy; and the APA State Leadership Award. Furthermore, Jeff is a Distinguished Practitioner in Psychology in the National Academies of Practice.

Mentoring Award:
Kenneth S. Pope, Ph.D. ABPP

Kenneth S. Pope embodies mentoring. Ken is in independent practice as a licensed psychologist. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology in Clinical Psychology. In addition to being a fellow of the Division of Psychologists in Independent Practice, Ken is a fellow of 8 Divisions within APA.
Ken’s mentoring activities are countless. He works with underserved and neglected populations, conducts research to better understand their needs, develops clinically and empirically grounded interventions to improve their welfare, and disseminates this knowledge in his writing and lecturing.

Indeed, his “Popelist” messages are frequently quoted and distributed in many psychological lists. Ken’s practice, research, presentations, and writings address the needs of people who experienced political torture, contracted AIDS, endured racial, gender, and other forms of discrimination, experienced physical or sexual assault, lacked access to mainstream services, or were exploited by therapists.

Diverse groups have recognized Ken’s generous contributions. He is the recipient of the Belle Meyer Bromberg Award for Literature; the Frances Mosseker Award for Fiction; the APA Division 42 Presidential Citation “In Recognition of his Voluntary Contributions, his Generosity of Time, the sharing of his Creative Spirit and his Personal Resources”; the APA Division 44 Citation of Appreciation, the APA Division 12 Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions to Clinical Psychology; and the APA Award for Distinguished Contributions to Public Service.

Distinguished Public Service Award
Lori Valencia Greene

Lori Valencia Greene is a Senior Legislative and Federal Affairs Officer with the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Public Policy Office.

She has a B.S. in English from the University of Maryland at College Park and a M.S. from the American University’s Kogood School of Business in Public Relations Management. Lori advocates on behalf of women and their families, poor individuals, people of color, gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. Prior to her APA position, Lori was a Legislative Representative with Planned Parenthood Federation of America and was responsible for lobbying the U.S. House of Representatives. Before that she represented the National Black Women’s Health Project on Capitol Hill.

Lori is a former member of the Montgomery County Commission on Children and Youth, the Public Education Center, Catholics for a Free Choice board, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington board, the Montgomery County Community Action Board, Commission for Women, and the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice’s Women of Color Partnership Project. Lori co-chaired the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Committee of the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition and served on their Steering Committee for Girl Neighborhood Power. Additionally, she co-chaired the Advisory Committee of the Black Religious Summit on Sexuality: Breaking the Silence, which is sponsored by the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice for five years and received their Judy Halperin Award. Lori Valencia Greene received the 2001 Congressional Black Caucus’s “Health Care Hero” Award

Lori conducts advocacy training for a variety of groups including the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, the National Black Women’s Health Project, the National Minority AIDS Council, the National Education Association, and the Montgomery County Commission for Women’s Legislative Briefings. She is the Founder of the Policy Action Network for Women Living with HIV/AIDS (PANWHA), a coalition of local and national organizations to address women of color issues. PANWHA focuses on federal HIV/AIDS policy on prevention, health care access and services, housing, surveillance and testing, and research. The coalition has conducted Congressional briefings and lobby visits as well as provided policy analysis to Members of Congress.
