Lessons For The Future

The 13th Annual Institute for Psychology in the Schools will explore the certainties and uncertainties disasters create for schools and how psychologists in the schools can help students prepare for whatever lies ahead. Focusing on New Orleans in the wake of Katrina, this year’s institute will bring together people from all levels of the school system to discuss what psychologists and other school personnel can do to better address the everyday mental well-being of students.

The Institute begins with a bus ride through New Orleans, allowing participants the opportunity to see how the city’s recovery is progressing. This activity is entirely voluntary; however, anyone wishing to attend must sign and return the attached waiver. Anyone choosing not to take the bus ride will be responsible for their transportation to the event at 2:00 pm and returning at 5:00pm.

The bus ride will conclude at Tulane University, where all of the event’s attendees will gather to hear presentations from speakers who are actively involved in helping schools recover from the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Robin Jarvis, Recovery School District Superintendent, will open the presentation by discussing the complexities of rebuilding the New Orleans school system. Stacy Overstreet (school psychologist), Margaret Leaf (teacher) and Robert Robinson (student) will describe how their school lives have changed since Katrina, as well as the new and old problems they now face. Monica Wertz, Principal of Belle Chase High School in Plaquemines Parish and recipient of the 2004 Louisiana High School Principal of the Year Award, will present the Keynote. Her presentation will focus on the need for greater mental health provisions in the schools, as well as what psychologists and other school mental providers can do to help prepare their own students and schools to handle a disaster.

NOTE: Registration for both the bus ride and the event is on a FIRST COME-FIRST SERVE BASIS

*Event fees will be waived ONLY for New Orleans residents (does not apply to bus ride fee)

*Anyone not taking the bus ride MUST arrange their own transportation to and from the event at Tulane University
