Letter from Past-President Rodino
Dear Division 42 Board Members, Committee Chairs and Task Force Chairs:

For about five years our Division has been functioning on a path identified for us through a process similar to what we are now re-experiencing. During his presidency, Mike Murphy conducted an assessment to look at the priorities of the Division so that these priorities would guide our budgetary decisions. In other words, we would be spending our money on the activities that our Division leadership noted were important to our membership.

At that time Division 42 leadership initiated the concept of marketing our practices. We were launching the notion of hiring public relations experts to help practitioners inform the public about the benefits of psychologists. I recall a retreat meeting where we decided to convince APA to spend money on marketing psychology to the public. The APA Public Education Campaign began. Now, several years later, APA is assessing the success of this program as we must also assess the programs and efforts we have been making to help our members survive and thrive in independent practice.

An assessment conducted by the Division's Marketing Committee revealed that many members were unaware of many of our programs. Many did not read the Independent Practitioner and many did not even know that we had brochures to help their practices. We need to find more effective techniques in communicating with our members and having them communicate with us.

Last year I appointed Mike Murphy and Jean Carter to lead a Task Force to again examine our priorities. We need to move through the next five years confident that we are spending our money, our time, and our efforts on the issues that are most important to independent practitioners and the membership of Division 42.

I am very hopeful that our weekend Board Retreat will be very productive and will lead our Division and our membership into greater success. I thank Mike and Jean for their accomplishments in this effort.

Sincerely,

Elaine Rodino, Ph.D.
