In a study involving both interviews with parents and direct observation of parenting behaviors, Lehigh University researchers have concluded that child rearing practices that include harsh, physical discipline are linked to aggressive behavior in children. Such disciplinary practices "..both terrorize and humiliate the child, adding to the sense of worthlessness and providing a model for coping in social interactions." Such practices are particularly deleterious in low SES groups, the authors concluded. The study appears in the February 2001 issue of the journal, Child Maltreatment.
