Publication Policies and Guidelines for 42 Online Authors

Web Site Mission Statement: The Division's Web Site ("42 Online") serves as a forum for members of the Division of Independent Practice of the American Psychological Association (Division 42) and as a center to convey information to the public via the Internet's World Wide Web. Its purposes are to facilitate Communication among Division members on topics pertaining to independent practice, to provide information from Divisional governance, and to promote the purposes of the Division.

Author Policies for 42 Online

    A. Priority shall be given to original content over content published elsewhere and reproduced on 42 Online. Articles published on 42 Online may be reprinted elsewhere only by the copyright holder (or other party authorized by the copyright holder), and in conjunction with Division Internet copyright policy as described below.

    B. References in all articles should conform to the current edition of the APA Publication Manual.

    C. At the request of the Internet Editor, the Chair of the Publications and Communication Committee may ask that members of the Committee, or other designated members of the Division, referee articles submitted to 42 Online. Among the goals of review shall be the conformity of an article to the purposes of 42 Online as described in the Division's Policy and Procedures manual, and generally for grammar, style, and collegiality.

    D. Controversies concerning published or reproduced content, and/or Letters to the Editor of 42 Online which can not be resolved by the Internet Editor or Internet Associate Editor shall be directed to the Publications and Communication Committee for investigation, and as needed, referred to the Executive Committee and/or Board of Directors for action."

    E. In the case of a suit against 42 Online or its staff, the following shall be the policy of the Division in this regard:

      Indemnification Policy

In the event of a legal action or claim against Division 42, the American Psychological Association ("APA") and/or certain named individuals (Division 42 elected and appointed individuals) resulting from the conduct of the business of the Division, including its publication and Internet activities, the Division's Board of Directors shall conduct itself as follows:

To the extent that the action or claim against one or more of the certain named individuals is covered by insurance obtained by APA, it shall be the policy of the Division to reimburse such named individuals who are covered by such insurance, for any self-insured retention amount (sometimes referred to as the "deductible amount") for which said individual may be liable, so long as the complained of conduct was not knowingly or intentionally wrong, wanton, willful or reckless, or grossly negligent. The Board's decision to reimburse its individual agents beyond funds available to them through insurance shall in each case be based upon the Board's considered evaluation of any such instance, but in the absence of a finding by the Board that there has been unauthorized wrongdoing, negligence or wanton, willful or reckless conduct on the part of its agent, or that such a payment would contravene the restrictions under which APA operates as a non-profit organization, such reimbursement shall not capriciously be withheld. In no event, however, shall any reimbursement payment be made from APA funds other than from the current assets of the Division itself, and the expenditure of Division funds for reimbursement of named individuals for any particular occurrence or legal action shall not exceed $100,000. The policy of Division 42 to reimburse is solely the policy of the Division. It is not a policy or undertaking of APA, and payment pursuant to this policy will be made only from Division 42 current assets and not from any other source.

    F. To cover costs for postage, reproduction and handling, the Division shall charge a fee for all reprints, copies and other 42 Online materials including those that cannot be directly downloaded or viewed by a user of 42 Online. Access to the membership area(s) of 42 Online shall be provided to Division members as a membership benefit.

    G. The Division shall give three awards annually with respect to 42 Online. The details of the awards are described under the Awards section of the Division's Policy and Procedures Manual.

    H. 42 Online will publish content on Continuing Education as such material is available.

Copyright Policy for 42 Online

    A. For original content (e.g., articles, columns), the author(s) shall retain copyright in their own name(s), with the proviso that Division 42 shall have the right to reproduce and publish first such content via 42 Online. Division 42 shall retain all copyright interest in the overall look, feel and organization of 42 Online (in toto).

    B. For content originally published on 42 Online, the author(s) shall provide a statement as follows on any other reproduction of the content: "The material herein was originally published on 42 Online, the web site of the division of Independent Practice of the American Psychological Association."

    C. Persons submitting articles to 42 Online must notify the Editors if an article has been previously published elsewhere or has been submitted for publication elsewhere. Persons submitting articles that have been excerpted from other sources must properly reference their sources and must obtain prior written permission from the copyright holder and provide such to the Internet Editors to reproduce said material on 42 Online.

    D. It shall be up to the author of any content published on 42 Online to make any necessary arrangements for permissions to reproduce content.

    E. Content reproduced on 42 Online from The Independent Practitioner shall be subject to the separate copyright provisions and policies governing The Independent Practitioner.

    F. Articles published on 42 Online may be reprinted elsewhere only by the copyright holder (or other party authorized by the copyright holder), and in conjunction with Division Internet copyright policy.

    G. Any controversial matter concerning copyright shall be referred for resolution to the Publication and Communication Committee, and then to the executive Committee and/or Board of Directors of the Division, as necessary.

Writing Style

The writing style should be tailored to the needs of the audience, and may range from formal in tone, to a more relaxed nature. In general, contributions should be professional in tone and content. Questions regarding style can be referred to the Internet Associate Editor.

Means of Submitting Materials and Subsequent Editing

All materials should be submitted via E-mail, except for requests from the editors to submit materials otherwise (e.g., to send a photo to Central Office for scanning, etc.).

There is strong pressure to absolutely minimize dealing with paper-based material, especially the retyping of an existing document.

All entries must be submitted typed, via E-mail to the Internet Associate editor for initial review. All materials are subject to editorial change at the discretion of the Editors. Substantive changes to content desired by the Editors, should be approved by the author.

Contributors who disagree with editorial decisions may decide to withdraw their contribution from publishing consideration. Unless otherwise stated, the views expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect official policy of Division 42, the American Psychological Association, or the editorial Staff of 42 Online.

In the subject line of your E-mail message, type 42 ONLINE and set your message for high priority if it is possible to do so with your E-mail program.

Please send computer disks and photos (if required for the content) directly to Central Office. Photographs should be taken with a plain background and should be current within the last five years (unless the photograph is regarding historical material).

Authors should submit a 1-3 line biographical summary and contact information for use with each contribution.

Except for meeting announcements, event schedules, featured news and the like, priority will be given to contributions that are original works of the authors and not submitted for publication elsewhere.

The length of time a contribution is on display on 42 Online is at discretion of the Internet Editor or the Internet Associate Editor.

The Division shall charge a fee, to cover costs for reproduction, postage and handling, for reprints and copies.
