Call For Fellowship Applications

Harriette Kaley, Ph. D., Chair, Fellows Committee

We urge you to apply for APA Fellow Status through Division 42!

Fellowship status in APA is the recognition of outstanding contributions to psychology. In the past, fellowship status, especially Initial Fellow status, was hard for clinicians to achieve. In the case of Division 42 particularly, our members were being disadvantaged by the old criteria of research and publications. But some years ago, the APA recognized that people forge distinguished careers in psychology in many different ways. Now, each division creates its own criteria, and Division 42’s are designed specifically for practitioners. The result is that the APA Membership Committee, which reviews applications for Initial Fellows and sets minimum standards, employs the Division’s own criteria for substantial and enduring contributions. Thus, the Committee is more receptive to practitioner contributions. We in Division 42 are eager to assist our members achieve the special acknowledgement of achievement that fellowship conveys.

There are two avenues to fellowship. Division 42 members who are not already Fellows of APA apply for Initial Fellowship through the Division, which then sends their applications for approval by the APA Membership Committee and the APA Council of Representatives. For members who are already Fellows of APA through another division, all it takes to be a Division 42 Fellow is sending a curriculum vita and a letter to the Division 42 Fellows Committee, indicating how you meet the Division 42 criteria. (For criteria for both Initial and Current Fellows, contact the Division at div42apa@cox.net) The Division 42 Fellows Committee makes recommendations to the Division 42 Executive Committee and the Division 42 Board of Directors votes those approved by both groups in as Fellows.

Members interested in Initial Fellow status should request an application from the Division 42 Central Office. You will be assigned a mentor, who is a Fellow who can assist you in preparing your application packet.

Basically, here is what you need to apply as an Initial Fellow:

  1. Completion of the application form;
  2. A detailed curriculum vitae;
  3. A self-nomination letter;
  4. Three (or more) letters of endorsement of your work by APA Fellows, at least two of whom must be Division 42 fellows;
  5. A cover letter, together with your c.v. and self-nomination letter, to each endorser.

When you request an application packet from Divison 42 Central Office (div42apa@cox.net), you will also receive a letter with somewhat more detailed suggestions on the various steps of the process. If you think you qualify, don’t be shy about applying. Contact me at dr.h.kaley@att.net, or Jeannie Beaff in the Central Office (div42apa@cox.net) . We are here to help you become a Fellow of Division 42!
