TERRORISM and PTSD

Psychologists Helping at or Near Ground Zero

10/22/01 - On terrorism, Sally Horwatt

One of the things I've been thinking about is how to preserve the infrastructure of our country when, God forbid, another attack occurs. My concern is that, as bad things happen, the vigilantes will come out, hate groups, etc. We need to have something ongoing in place to keep, to the extent possible, our own people from cannibalizing our own institutions. One of the things that we've been doing here in Northern Virginia is through the "Faith - based" institutions. For example, we've been accompanying Muslim women to the grocery store to provide a sense of safety. I think we need to be networking through the broader community to keep trust and communication going. But I'm not exactly sure how this can be done most effectively. I also think other kinds of things should be done, but I'm not sure what.
