TERRORISM and PTSD

Psychologists Helping at or Near Ground Zero

My town is less than 10 miles from the WTC, and the NY skyline can be seen from many vantage points. Even at this distance, there were probably thousands who were directly affected. Many who live here make the daily trek to NY, and a subset of those of course go to the financial district. There have been many loses, both of residents and to families who lost relatives. Also, of course, there is the collateral damage of those who were evacuated but who no longer have a place to work, those who worked inbusinesses that have been shut down, and those who survived and are traumatized by their experiences. In addition there are many whose offices are not in immediate proximity to the WTC but who now feel vulnerable
because they work in high rise buildings in the city.

Our town quickly organized mental health services staffed by scores of psychologists and other counselors. Facilities were provided in the municipal building of the town and many came. We saw evacuees, families of the missing, and others more indirectly affected as well. Therapists also volunteered to work with our Fire Department which went in to help in the rescue efforts and others volunteered to help in our school system (17 students lost family members). In addition to on-site services, the town is assembling a list of therapists willing to provide pro bono services to those affected by this tragedy. The outpouring of generosity and concern by the mental health community here was truly heartwarming.
