In Touch With 42
No. 1

Dear Division 42 Colleagues and Friends,

This is your first issue of In Touch With 42, an e-mail newsletter to keep you informed about your Division, Psychologists in Independent Practice. Throughout my year as President, I will keep you informed of issues that face the Division and the profession and the work of the Division's leadership to address them.

National Multicultural Conference and Summit and Diversity

One of my Presidential Initiatives for the coming year focuses on diversity. We are planning a number of projects and initiatives to advance diversity within our Division and to assist our members in responding effectively to our changing demographics.

Division 42 is a financial Supporter of The National Multicultural Conference and Summit: we submitted two outstanding programs prepared by Doug Haldeman, Jo Johnson, and Rita Dudley-Grant with input from our Diversity Committee; many of our Board members will be attending the NMCS, and we will hold our Mid-Winter Board meeting in conjunction with the NMCS.

Please visit the website at www.multiculturalsummit.org for more information and to register. I hope many of you will be able to attend. If you can attend please let me know so I can provide you with details about our Board meeting. You would be welcome to attend the meeting.

APA Convention

Division 42 had a very successful convention program at the recent APA Convention in Hawai'i. Special thanks are due to our Program Chair, Jo Johnson, our Associate Program Chair, Miguel Gallardo, our volunteer reviewers, and all our fine presenters. Our presentations were well attended and feedback received seemed very positive. We also had a student poster session during our Social Hour and presented travel awards to the best of the student posters. This was a great way to encourage our profession's next generation and we hope to continue and build on this.

It's not too early to begin planning for next year's convention in Washington, D.C. Please plan now to attend and start thinking about submissions for our convention program. The call for submissions will be in the September APA Monitor. We plan to include as part of our convention program a series of practical workshops designed to help practitioners be successful in practice from graduate school to retirement. If you have ideas for specific topics or presenters please get in touch with me right away.

The Division 42 Board met during the convention (they worked hard and missed out on a lot of quality beach time) and accomplished a lot. Brief highlights include the appointment of our incoming Editor of the Independent Practitioner, Ed Lundeen, and our incoming website editor, Gordon Herz. Both are now completing three years as Associate Editors and each have a number of exciting ideas for improving and enhancing these two major communication vehicles and resources of the Division. Please visit our website at www.division42.org to see many of the things we're doing and to access many of the resources available to members. More are on the way!

Your Division 42

This is your Division. It is important that we work together to make this the Division of all practitioners. In collaboration, we can be successful at helping our members to have more successful practices and meeting the wide range of needs of our members. Division 42 does a lot, but there's much more we can do to work toward and achieve our goals. I look forward to your ideas, input, and involvement, and to a great year for Division 42.

I thank you for the opportunity to serve as your 2005 President. I look forward to your input as I prepare for the coming year and to working together toward our shared goals. If you want to volunteer to help, have ideas or suggestions, and if there are issues you would like us to address please let me know. If there are any issues that concern you, if you have any questions, or if you have feedback, please contact me directly at drjbarnett1@comcast.net

Best regards to all - Jeff
