Dear Division 42 Colleagues and Friends,

Please be sure to vote in the Division 42 election. You will be selecting our next President-Elect, Treasurer, two Members-at-Large, and one Representative to APA Council. Look for your election ballot in the mail and please be sure to vote. This is a great opportunity to help set the direction the Division will take for years to come.

For a list of recommended books that address business of practice issues as well as legal and ethics issues in practice please see Mike Monroe’s suggested readings at:

other suggestions please send them to me directly and I can update this list for members.

Gordon Herz, our Division 42 Internet Editor, shares the following information and resources
concerning HIPAA and professional liability insurance.

Ed Zuckerman obtained permission from his publisher, Guilford, and has contributed an entire chapter/section from "The Paper Office" on professional liability insurance. This is in pdf format and is not a small file (1.4 megs), and will take 3-4 minutes to download with a dialup internet connection (much more zippy with high speed connection), but is WELL WORTH IT and will speak to most typical questions about purchasing malpractice insurance.

In addition, Ed arranged for a colleague, Margaret Bogie, who is a licensed insurance consultant with a master's in health services administration and has worked with both APAIT and Am Prof Agency, to provide an series of articles she wrote on "shopping tips" for professional liability insurance. That series of articles also is available now in the "Practice Perfect" portion of the Division 42 website.

Finally, Ed has provided a very current update on the HIPAA security rule which includes sections on "national provider identifer" numbers, encryption, ICD9 and more. All these articles are available through links at: http://www.division42.org/MembersArea/PracticePerfect/PracticePerfect.htm.

For the article “What’s the Right Way to Get Off a Managed Care Panel?” visit the site of
Psychotherapy Finances at http://www.psyfin.com/articles/040401.htm. It addresses ethical, legal, and clinical issues all practitioners need to understand when withdrawing from participation with an MCO. For the article “Consulting with Schools to Develop Referral Sources” go to http://www.psyfin.com/articles/030403.htm. This link also includes advice from Division 42 member, Dana Ackley, Ph.D. titled “Opportunity Awaits Beyond the Office Door.”
