Workshop Description
In this intermediate to advanced skills workshop, Dr. Meichenbaum will describe the "core tasks of psychotherapy" and demonstrate how they are implemented in a practical manner. He will begin with a brief consideration of the nature of expertise and apply this model to the area of psychotherapy. He will provide a Case Conceptualization Model that informs both assessment and treatment decision-making. He will consider ways to assess for risk of violence toward oneself (suicide and toward others and consider the implications for interventions. He will provide a Constructive Narrative cognitive behavioral perspective of behavior change and demonstrate, using videotape case presentations and a detailed Handout - "how to implement evidence-based interventions".
Dr. Meichenbaum will examine ways to conduct core tasks such as nurturing a therapeutic alliance, conducting psychoeducation, nurturing hope, teaching skills that will generalize and conducting reiapse prevention. In the approximately 50% of the psychiatric cases where there is a history of vicitmization, he will consider ways to address issues of post-trauma symptomatology and co-morbid disorders, conduct "memory work" from a Constructive Narrative Perspective, nurture meaning treatment using spiritually-based interventions and help avoid re-victimization in patients and vicarious traumatization in psychotherapists.
A major theme to be addressed throughout is how to anticipate and address issues of treatment non-adherence and patient noncompliance.
Educational Objectives:
